It’s a product answers agent, not an AI Sales Engineer
I cold email a prospect about Sam. This was their response:
“It’s a product answers agent, not an AI Sales Engineer. It’s DEEPLY INSULTING to human sales engineers to imply that’s all they do on calls with AEs.”
I thought it was an overreaction, but that’s not why I’m sharing it.
I’m sharing it because it reflects something deeper about the current moment. There’s a palpable anxiety in the air, born from a feeling that the ground is shifting below our feet and that the jobs that once anchored our lives and self-worth are changing because of AI.
So, an aspirational marketing position — AI Sales Engineer — becomes a threat and insult to our profession.
I empathize with this fear, but it’s misplaced. AI is not going to replace us.
I believe:
- People will still want to buy from people, not AI.
- People will still want lawyers, not AI.
- People will still want doctors, not AI.
AI is not going to replace SEs, lawyers, or doctors. But SEs, lawyers, or doctors who are better at AI are going to replace those that aren’t.
And that’s where the anxiety of this moment comes from: when the dust settles, will I still be the best at my job?
